For a long time I could hardly be bothered less by mobile phones and their photographic potential – until this spring my trusty old Pixel 4a final bit the dust and I had to bite the bullet and get something new. I opted for a Pixel 8a, Google’s (then) new entry level smartphone, just as I was about to embark on a roadtrip across the Balkans with my best mate as we celebrated our graduation from medical school. We loaded up the ‘Rottach’ as we had lovingly christened his old Golf 3, grabbed our new Pixel 8a and iPhone 15 Pro and made our way from Munich through Austria and Slovenia to Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Albania, Bosnia again, and finally Hungary.
